Weight loss - everyone knows how to do it - eat less and exercise more. This is the Golden Rule of weight loss. Most people are looking for a “quick fix” but in reality -there is none. Weight loss will occur when you take in fewer calories than you burn through everyday activities and exercise. However, not everyone is the same and what will help one person to lose weight may not be so effective for another. There are literally hundreds, probably thousands, of diet plans, exercise DVDs, and books, all geared toward giving you options for losing weight. It seems every magazine has a “new” diet plan to intrigue readers. Weight loss success comes to those who are determined and persistent and who are willing to take responsibility for their own health. Here are some of the top weight loss tips:

Change your lifestyle. Diets do not work. When you change your lifestyle, however, you’re changing your habits – and you’re putting yourself on track for long-term. To lose weight and keep it off, you must change your habits, because obviously your present habits aren’t working - otherwise you would not have a weight problem.

Join an online support group. It’s essential that you do not feel alone, and reaching out to understanding friends helps. You have to know that others are out there for moral support and it’s always good to talk with someone who has “been in your shoes.”

Take before and after photos. Post the before photo on your refrigerator or in some other place where you will see it daily.

Find lower calorie substitutes for some of your favorite high fat, high calorie foods. If something different doesn’t taste good, find a better substitute, or eat less of the original. In some cases, the substitute may be worse for you than the regular version of the product. Experiment until you find something that works for you.

Read labels. Get in the habit of reading the labels, number of calories, fat, carbs and sugar grams. Watch portion size.

Make exercise a regular part of your daily routine. There is no getting around it - you must move your body in order to burn calories and lose weight. Find something that you enjoy - jogging, stationary bike, walking, yoga, swimming, hiking, dancing. Find what works best for you. If you don’t like it - you won’t do it. Also, the “old” mantra of “no pain, no gain” is not true. You can lose weight without hurting yourself. If taking 3 ten minute walks per day works better for you than one 30-minute walk - great, go for it. Also, try exercising to music. It seems to make the time go faster and takes your mind off the physical activity.
